Mitchell Sanders

Mitchell Sanders holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne, as well as an Associate in Music (AMusA) from the Australian Music Examinations Board. He has also received training in acting and dance at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Mitchell was a member of the Opera Scholars Australia program from 2020 to 2022, where he had the privilege of working with esteemed artists such as Tiffany Speight, Yvonne Kenny, Deborah Cheetham, and Guy Noble. He was a runner-up finalist in the 2020 and 2021 OSA Aria Competitions.

Mitchell has performed in several notable productions, including Orpheus in the Underworld (Offenbach) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Todd) with the Australian Contemporary Opera Company, and Grumpiest Boy in the World (Twist) with Victorian Opera Company. He has also appeared in scenes as Ferrando (Cosi fan Tutte), Basilio/Don Curzio (Marriage of Figaro), Mayor (Albert Herring), and Alfredo (La Traviata).

Mitchell made his major role debut as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute in 2023, receiving rave reviews. In early 2024, he was directed by Beverly Blankenship (Berlin) in Menotti’s The Medium as Toby and as Bill in Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge. He also performed with Victorian Opera in Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s Parrwang Lifts the Sky, portraying both Mr. Waa and Koki.

To close 2024, Mitchell performed as the Hexe (Witch) in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the University of Melbourne, earning praise from Paul Selar of the Australian Arts Review, who wrote, “Sanders sings with commendable and commanding force as the Witch.”

Mitchell is the proud recipient of the Catherine Grace McWilliam Prize from the University of Melbourne and the Peter and Melissa Hebbard Scholarship.
